Tilda Swinton, the Dr. Strange actress, recently opened up about her sexual identity in an interview with British Vogue. Let’s explore more about her sexuality here.
The Oscar-winning British actress, 60, discussed her new projects, her inspiring career, and her sexuality. Tilda Swinton also revealed that she has always felt queer, even before coming out, and that she just wanted to be comfortable in her career before disclosing the news.
She went on to say that for her, queerness means having sensibility, which she is glad she has discovered.
Is Tilda Swinton Gay Or Transgender?
Tilda Swinton discusses her identity as a journey rather than a fixed point in an interview for the cover of British Vogue. “I’m not sure I could ever truly say I was a girl,” she says. “I was a boy for a long time.” I’m not sure, who knows? It shifts.”
This fascination with transformation can be seen in nearly every role she has played on screen, whether it is as a normcore character in Trainwreck or as a high fantasy character in The Chronicles of Narnia.
Swinton played the title character in Sally Potter’s 1992 film Orlando, loosely based on Virginia Woolf’s novel about a character who transitions between genders.
She described gender as a “transformative possibility” in a 2009 interview with Women’s International Perspective news outlet. “That whole idea of transformation is at the heart of what I’m interested in as a performer, not least through the concept of gender,” she explained at the time.
She questioned the concept of identity in general during the same conversation. “My concept of identity is that I’m not sure it exists,” she continued.
Tilda Swinton Sexuality Revealed
It’s no surprise, then, that Tilda Swinton identifies with the term “queer.” She uses the word “queer” to describe a broad and unconventional way of thinking, not sexual orientation.
“I’m very clear that queer has to do with sensibility, at least for me,” she tells British Vogue. “I’ve always felt queer; I was looking for my queer circus, and I found it.” And now that I’ve found it, it’s my world.”
She added that her “queer circus” of creative collaborators includes directors such as Luca Guadagnino of Call Me By Your Name, Oscar winner Bong Joon-ho, and Wes Anderson, who directed Swinton in The French Dispatch.
The pandemic has caused a delay in the release of the latter film, which was initially scheduled for 2021.
Swinton’s collaborations with her “queer circus” have resulted in a unique body of work, but she insists that was not her intention.
