Rui Hachimura parents are Makiko Hachimura and Zakari Jabil. Hachimura was born to a multi ethnic family in Toyama.
This 6 feet 8 inches NBA giant has gained popularity for his background, besides his impressive basketball handling skills. A Japanese by birth, he has settled down in the bustling new world of Washington, D.C., for a bright NBA career.
Being far from home and his loved ones, Hachimura is making out the best of his life in the U.S. while he returns to his homeland to play for the Japanese national team as a loyal countryman.
He has a rich identity as half Asian and African.
Rui Hachimura Parents
Rui Hachimura mom Makiko Hachimura is from Japan while dad Zakari Jabil is from Benin. Rui spent his childhood in Toyama Prefecture.
Hachimura has largely maintained his silence about his birth givers and extended clan to protect their privacy.
Although the talks about his dad and mom’s identity and their everyday lives have widely triggered public interest, everyone around this NBA player has sided with him to keep Mr. and Mrs. Hachimura from the grasp of the media.
The Athletic in 2019 reported on Rui and his close associates’ attempt to shield his mother and father’s names by directly dodging the question and his decision not to reveal them at that time.
He has left it for the time when his folks get famous, but he has no intention of deliberately putting them in the news and papers.
Father Zakari Jabil
The former Gonzaga forward was born to a Beninese father, Zakari Jabil. Benin is a West African country with a population of 13 million, mainly speaking French.
A mix of an African father and a Japanese mother, this NBA powerhouse’s appearance goes more after his pops, contrary to his surname as Japanese.
Thus, his unique identity caught the attention of many in international media, not leaving his basketball skills.
Mother Makiko Hachimura
Rui inherited his last name from his mother, Makiko, a Japanese by birth. The Japanese law for international marriage mainly requires a Japanese as the head of the family register to pass down their family name.
Hence, abiding by the rule, the Wizards player and his siblings took upon their mom’s last name as they were born and raised in Japan all along.
Given his upbringing, the eldest Hachimura is closer to his Japanese culture while he showed concern for the peaking BLM movement in 2020.
As an ode to his surname, Hachimura wears jersey number 8 as “Hachi” in Japanese means eight.
Rui Hachimura Family
Hachimura grew up in a big family of five under the care of his Beninese dad and an Asian mom.
He was born in Toyama Prefecture and got a Japanese name, “Rui,” which means “base” or “fortress” in the local language. Meanwhile, he attended Meisei High School in Sendai and later moved to Gonzaga University in 2016.
Rui had learned English from scratch at the uni as he adapted to a new life in the United States. Bleacher Report confirmed that his mother and father do not speak English and know little about it.
As a supportive hand, his mom, dad, and siblings often visit him in the States and attend his games to cheer for him.
Rui Hachimura Siblings
Rui Hachimura has three siblings named Allen Hachimura, Amina Hachimura and another sister. All three Hachimura are somehow involved in basketball.
Even so, the Hachimura sisters support their brothers’ fast-forwarding basketball careers.
Brother Allen Hachimura
Allen, or “Aren,” is the younger brother of this rising NBA star. The younger Hachimura is also a basketball player for the Tokai Seagulls of Tokai University in Japan.
Aren is engaging on social media, including Twitter and Instagram, where he has acquired thousands of followers.
He confirmed that he got into basketball just because Rui played it. Within a short time, the sport fueled his passion, and Lebron James became his inspiration to continue his quest.
Apart from playing for his uni team, Allen also looks after his pet dog, a Miniature Poodle named Jake.
Moreover, he also makes time to speak on the racial injustice he and his brother face as a mixed-Asian. In May 2021, this 23-year-old openly tweeted a screenshot of an Instagram user scolding him due to his unique parentage.
