This Morning viewers have lambasted pundit Matthew Wright following his remarks about Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
The former The Wright Stuff host faced the wrath of royal-lovers on the ITV show as he slammed the celebrations to mark the monarch’s 70th anniversary on the throne.
The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations are filled with events including today’s Service of Thanksgiving.
Matthew appeared alongside Gyles Brandreth on the ITV show to discuss the latest news and the conversation ultimately turned to the Queen’s big party.
“We were talking earlier and it’s wonderful and the spectacle I get, but at a time when we are haemorrhaging money as a country,” Matthew said.
“If you were some kind of celebrity, who’s spending loads, millions, on parties when you’re sort of bankrupt, people would be outraged and this is a disgrace. But that’s what we’re doing as a nation.”
Host Dermot O’Leary questioned him: “What do you think we should be doing?”
Matthew replied: “I think it could all be scaled down just a bit,” before later riling the celebrations were being “funded by the public purse.”
However, his comments angered the royal fans and as a result, blasted him.
@RyanShaw2709 Oh bore off tweeted: “@Matthew_Wright. If you don’t want to celebrate the queen’s incredible service and platinum jubilee, something that will probably never happen again, stay at home you killjoy. The rest of us want to meet and have a good time after 2 years of lockdowns #ThisMorning.”
