Rosa Parks Net Worth, Income, Salary, Earnings, Biography

Ms. Rosa Louise McCauley Parks (February 4, 1913 – October 24, 2005) was an African-American civil rights fighter who was dubbed “the first woman of civil rights” and “the mother of the freedom struggle” by the United States Congress. She was born into a family of civil rights activists. Rosa Parks’ birthday, February 4, and the day she was arrested, December 1, have both been designated as Rosa Parks Days in the United States, with celebrations taking place in the states of California and Ohio. During a bus ride in Montgomery, Alabama, on December 1, 1955, Parks refused to comply with bus driver James F. Blake’s request that she give up her seat in the coloured section to a white passenger after the white section had been completely filled. Parks was not the first person to speak out against bus segregation in the 1960s. A number of other women had taken similar steps before Parks, including Irene Morgan in 1946, Sarah Louise Keys in 1955, and the plaintiffs in the Browder v. Gayle lawsuit (Claudette Colvin, Aurelia Browder, Susie McDonald, and Mary Louise Smith), who were arrested in Montgomery a few months before Parks. After her arrest for civil disobedience in violation of Alabama segregation laws, NAACP organisers believed that Parks was the most qualified candidate to see through a legal challenge. However, her case eventually became bogged down in the state courts, while the Browder v. Gayle case was successful. In the contemporary Civil Rights Movement, Rosa Parks’ act of disobedience, as well as the Montgomery Bus Boycott, have become significant icons. She rose to worldwide prominence as a symbol of opposition to racial segregation.

Ms. King collaborated and organised with civil rights leaders, including Edgar Nixon, president of the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People; and Martin Luther King, Jr., a newly ordained minister who rose to national prominence as a leader in the civil rights movement. Parks was the secretary of the NAACP branch in Montgomery at the time of the incident. She had just returned from the Highlander Folk School, a Tennessee institution dedicated to the training of activists for labour rights and racial justice. She acted in the capacity of a private person who was “weary of giving in.” Her actions were not only recognised, but she was also dismissed from her work as a seamstress at a local department store, which she subsequently regretted. She was eventually awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. She eventually relocated to Detroit, where she temporarily found employment in a similar field. She worked as a secretary and receptionist for John Conyers, an African-American member of the United States Congress, from 1965 until 1988. Parks retired and spent the rest of her life in Detroit, writing her memoirs and maintaining a mostly quiet existence. She was suffering from dementia in her latter years of life. Parks earned many awards and honours, including the NAACP’s Spingarn Medal in 1979, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Congressional Gold Medal, and a posthumous statue in the National Statuary Hall of the United States Capitol. Parks died in 1989. When she died in 2005, she became the first woman and only the second non-U.S. government official to be laid to rest in the Rotunda of the Capitol.
