He also served as Sally Taylor’s relief presenter during this time and worked for several other BBC TV outlets. He was named the Year’s Regional Sports Presenter of the Royal Television Society in 2002 and was nominated on three other occasions.
After 14 years, he left BBC South in September 2011 to replace Gordon Burns as the main anchor alongside Ranvir Singh and then Annabel Tiffin on North West Tonight. Johnson anchored coverage of the Hillsborough Disaster’s 25th Anniversary Service in April 2014. At the Royal Television Society North West Awards, the program was named Best Regional News Program.
