Samuel Roger Horchow is a catalogue entrepreneur and Broadway producer who was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on July 3, 1928. Horchow launched The Horchow Collection in 1971, the first luxury mail-order catalogue to launch without a physical location. In 1988, he sold his Horchow Collection to Neiman Marcus. He received the Tony Award for Best Musical for his debut Broadway production, Crazy for You, a George Gershwin musical, in 1992. The Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical went to the London production of Crazy for You. Despite the fact that Crazy for You was based on a previous Gershwin musical, Girl Crazy, which premiered in 1930, theatre reviewers and the American Theater Wing saw it as a “new musical.” Mike Ockrent directed and Susan Stroman choreographed Crazy for You. Horchow received his second Tony Award for Best Musical Revival in 2000, when he and co-producer
Roger Berlind produced a revival of Cole Porter’s Kiss Me, Kate. Horchow co-produced Curtains, a humorous murder mystery nominated for eight Tony Awards and ten Drama Desk Awards, alongside other producers in 2007, and was a secondary producer in the Broadway revival of Gypsy with Patty Lupone in 2008. Horchow graduated from The Hill School in 1945. The Sixth Form Leadership Award, the school’s highest alumni award, was bestowed to him in 2002. Horchow received an honorary doctorate from his alma mater, Yale University, in 1999, and is the subject of Malcolm Gladwell’s famous book The Tipping Point (Little, Brown, 2000) ISBN 0-316-34662-4. Horchow is the author of three books: “The Art of Friendship: 70 Simple Rules for Making Meaningful Connections” (St. Martin’s Press, 2006), “The Art of Friendship: 70 Simple Rules for Making Meaningful Connections” (Neiman Marcus, 2007), and “The Art of Friendship: 70 Simple Rules for Making Meaningful Connections” (St. Martin’s Press,
