Canadian musician and artist Rodney Graham, who lived from January 16, 1949, until October 22, 2022 was most frequently linked to the Vancouver School.
Rodney Graham’s art draws inspiration from Vancouver’s photoconceptual heritage of the 1970s and frequently incorporates all of these elements.
Rodney Graham started making movies and videos in which he plays the lead role in himself in 1994.
These movies and videos include Halcion Sleep, Vexation Island, How I Became a Ramblin’ Man, and The Phonokinetoscope. The latter two were screened at the Canadian pavilion of the 1997 Venice Biennale (2002).
In the 1997 movie Vexation Island, Graham plays a stranded seaman who awakens on a tropical island only to be knocked out by a coconut that Rodney Graham successfully shook from a palm tree.
After some time, Rodney Graham wakes up again, goes back to the tree, and the cycle continues. Later, in Rheinmetall/Victoria 8 (2003), two rapidly fading technologies the typewriter and the movie projector confront one another, with the latter showing a movie made using the former.
Graham’s solo shows have shown at the Vancouver Art Gallery (2012), the MACBA in Barcelona (2010), and the Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Basel and Hamburger Kunsthalle.
At the age of 73, Graham passed away in Vancouver on October 22, 2022.
