Most people, especially young wrestling fans, are tempted to call it a “slip” when Rocky Johnson’s name is mentioned. They are quick to point out that this is likely an erroneous reference to former wrestling champ Dwayne Johnson, known as The Rock. But you can forgive their ignorance for not knowing there was ‘Rocky’ before ‘The Rock’.
Speaking of The Rock, WWE and Hollywood fans alike are in awe of the seemingly simple way the former WWE Superstar rose from WWE to become a highly sought-after movie star who proved capable of s in all the roles entrusted to it. Be it comedy, sci-fi, epic, crime, action movies, Dwayne has done it all in a short amount of time. But for the record, Dwayne Johnson is the son of Rocky Johnson.
Wayde Douglas Bowles is his birth name but he is widely known as Rocky Johnson. He was, like his son, a professional wrestler before his retirement. Johnson was born on August 24, 1943 in Amherst, Nova Scotia, Canada. His parents were James Henry and Linda Bowles, who had five sons, and Johnson was their fourth child.
Life became difficult for young Johnson when his father passed away when he was thirteen. He was forced to leave home when his mother chose her boyfriend over him. Growing up in Amherst, Nova Scotia, he lived homeless and destitute for three years, then moved to Toronto, Ontario, then aged 16, in order to find opportunities.
In Toronto, he got a job as a truck driver and also got involved in the local struggle. Fascinated by the sport, he had first wanted to be a boxer when he came into contact with renowned boxers of the time, such as Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in a gymnasium, even becoming their training partner at the time of their training. However, his love for wrestling took over and continued.
Career
At 21, Rocky Johnson had already turned pro, wrestling professionally in Southern Ontario and was about to chart a new path for himself. He started by dropping his birth name, “Wayde Douglas Bowles,” and then legally registering a new name: Rocky Johnson. He joined the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) and became one of the Alliance’s premium fighters after being trained by legendary high boss Peter Maivia himself.
Prior to joining NWA in 1970, his wrestling career saw him compete against champions from around the world. In the NWA, he won numerous regional titles, but failed to dethrone the World Champion titleholders of becoming World Champion twice – first against Terry Funk and then against Harley Race. He wore a mask during his fights in the NWA and had the ring name “Sweet Ebony Diamond”.
He transitioned to the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), dubbed World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in 1983, had a successful tag team partnership with Tony Atlas, known as “Soul Patrol.” Together they won the 1983 Tag Team Championship as the first black wrestlers to do so after defeating the Wild Samoans. His stint in the WWF also saw him feuding with other wrestlers such as Greg Valentine, Adrian Adonis, Mike Sharpe, and more.
Rocky Johnson retired from active wrestling in 1991 and focused his attention on raising another ‘Rocky Johnson’ in the form of his son, Dwayne. He enlisted the help of his friend and fellow wrestler, Pat Patterson, to help train young Dwayne. He was then hired to work with WWE’s developmental program in 2003 and was later released.
Family life – wife, son
Johnson’s first marriage was to a lady named Una. Their wedding date appears to be in conflict with online sources, however, they married in the 1960s and had two children together before their divorce in 1968. The children’s names are Curtis, a son and a daughter named Wanda.
His relationship with legendary top chef Peter Maivia became a mentor and trainer to his in-laws when he married his daughter, Ata Maivia, in December 1970 (full name is Feagaimaleta Fitisemanu Maiva). His family is descended from the prolific Anoa’i wrestling family, which has a long list of notable wrestlers in its line. However, her father, Peter, did not approve of her relationship with Rocky Johnson as he believed his daughter needed a man who was there for her, knowing the wrestlers’ difficult careers.
The marriage would stand anyway and it would have produced Her son, Dwayne Johnson, was born on May 2, 1972. Their marriage lasted more than three decades, but quickly came to a head in February 2003. A year after her divorce from Ata Maivia Johnson, he was back to the marriage equation, this time with Dana Martin in 2004.
Rocky Johnson is dead – where is he now?
Rocky Johnson is not dead but retired from wrestling. And while he did it a little early, he now lives in Davie, Fla., with his wife, Dana Martin. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2008 and a project is currently underway to capture his life and career in a biopic. The idea for the project was developed by filmmakers Jonathan and Justin Gajewski, better known as the JG Brothers. The title of the film will be King of the Ring
