Ellen arrived to replace Jaki (Nancy Brunning) with daughter Minnie and husband Johnny (Stelios Yiakmis). However soon after they arrived, the marriage broke up when Johnny strayed. Depressed and alone, Ellen accidentally burnt down the house with a lit cigarette. The arrival of Ellen’s sister Carla didn’t help when Ellen discovered her sister was a possible psychopath. Ellen dated Bernie Leach (Timothy Bartlett) but ended up returning to Johnny for a short-lived affair. Ellen revealed to Minnie that she was a product of rape and she was devastated when Carla tried to murder her after being sectioned. Ellen started to date David Kearney (Peter Elliott) but Ellen misinterpreted the arrival of
his wife and fled. The two reunited in Fiji where Ellen confessed she was pregnant.
The two married but the death of their baby Rose (Georgia Bishop) the following year, separated the two and they both had affairs. They finally decided to reunite but David felt obliged to stay with his girlfriend who was dying from cancer. They reconciled when David was diagnosed with a blinding disorder and the two left for early retirement. Ellen informed Waverley Wilson (Claire Chitham) on the phone, that she and David would not be attending her marriage to David’s son Fergus (Paul Ellis).
Robyn Malcolm Lord of The Rings
Malcolm helped spearhead an actors’ union campaign to negotiate standard contracts for actors in The Hobbit films. The producers refused, saying that collective bargaining would be considered price-
fixing and therefore illegal under New Zealand law. The boycott escalated internationally but the boycott was called off.
Several days later, the producers said they were considering moving the films to another country as they could not be guaranteed stability in New Zealand. In response, the ruling National Party made several controversial changes to New Zealand’s employment laws and passed legislation explicitly controlling people working on the Hobbit movies.

On 21st June 2017 she appeared on All Talk with Anika Moa series 2 episode 8 where she was asked if Jackson has ever asked her in one of his films or he was still angry, she responded:
“It was a nasty and embarrassing moment in New Zealand history, that a Hollywood production company could turn up on the doorstep of our government buildings and walk in and have the labour laws changed overnight.
All we were doing was…it was so simple – it was like, New Zealand actors should be treated the way every other actor on this production is being treated. The only reason is that somehow we were undervalued and that’s all it was – I got yelled at, pushed in the gutter, got a death threat: ‘Why don’t you f… off to Australia and die of a spider bite’.”
