Robert Gray Smith (born September 17, 1942, as Robert Gray Smith) is an American true crime novelist who specialises in homicide investigations. When the Zodiac Killer case came to light in 1969, he was working as a political cartoonist for the San Francisco Chronicle. The case consumed Graysmith for the next thirteen years, as he tried to decipher letters sent by the murderer and grew obsessed with solving it. Despite the fact that his second marriage ended in divorce, he believes it was due to his great interest in the case. When Graysmith discovered the case, he published two volumes about it before quitting his job as a Pulitzer Prize-nominated cartoonist to write five additional books about high-profile murders, one of which was adapted into the 2002 film Auto Focus. The 2007 film Zodiac, directed by David Fincher and based on his novels, starred Jake Gyllenhaal as Graysmith and was a critical and commercial success. Graysmith is now residing in San Francisco.
