Robert Glasper Children: Meet Riley Glasper

American pianist, record producer, songwriter, and musical arranger Robert Andre Glasper was born on April 6, 1978. His work crosses several musical and artistic genres but is mostly concerned with jazz. Glasper has received five Grammy Awards so far and has received eleven nominations in eight categories.

Glasper’s self-titled debut album was released in 2002 via Fresh Sound New Talent. The album Mood has six original compositions as well as cover songs of jazz standards including Herbie Hancock’s “Maiden Voyage.”

The majority of the album is a piano trio recording with singer Bilal and saxophonists Marcus Strickland and John Ellis. Damion Reid performs the drums, and Bob Hurst plays the bass.

At about this time, Glasper and Bilal worked on the singer’s unreleased but widely pirated second album, Love for Sale, at Electric Lady Studios.

With Vicente Archer on bass and Damion Reid on drums, Glasper’s debut album for Blue Note Records, Canvas, was released in 2005. This lineup would go on to become his signature piano trio. The CD includes a cover of Herbie Hancock’s “Riot” in addition to nine original songs.
