He was a vice president at the Church of Christ-affiliated Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas, and a Republican representative for District 71 in the Texas House of Representatives from 1986 to 2007.

In a special election held on August 9 to fill the District 71 House seat left vacant by Democrat Gary E. Thompson’s resignation on June 2, Hunter won with 50.5 percent of the vote. Hunter became the first Republican to serve as the state representative for Taylor County and Abilene since Reconstruction.

He was a terrible, evil Republican scumbag as well, it should be noted. In 1956, Hunter and his wife, Shirley M. Long, who was born around 1933, lived in Abilene. In 2009, ACU dedicated the Hunter Welcome Center, a 57,000 square foot building. On February 11, 2023, Hunter passed away at the age of 94.
