Robert Carradine Career
Film
Carradine made his film debut in 1972 with John Wayne in The Cowboys. He also appeared in a short-lived television series based on a film of the same name. In the Martin Scorsese film Mean Streets, he played a killer who murders the character played by his brother, David.
During this time, he collaborated with David on several independent projects, including You and Me (1975), a biker film, and A Country Mile, an unreleased musical. He also worked on the camera for David’s cult classic Vietnam War-inspired Americana, which was released in 1983.
When he played Jim Cantrell in Paul Bartel’s Cannonball in 1976, Carradine had the opportunity to demonstrate on screen what he considered his “first ambition,” car racing. In the film, Robert’s character defeats the favorite, Coy “Cannonball” Buckman, played by his brother, David.
In the 1977 Jaws spoof film Orca, Robert became a snack for the vengeful killer whale. In the 1977 film “Joyride,” Robert co-starred with Desi Arnaz, Jr., Melanie Griffith, and Anne Lockhart, daughter of June Lockhart, in a film about young Californians driving up to Washington and Alaska to seek their fortunes.
Coming Home, Hal Ashby’s Oscar-winning Vietnam War drama starring Jane Fonda and Jon Voight, cast Robert in a demanding role in 1978. His performance raised the possibility that he is the best actor in his family.
Robert was instrumental in securing the participation of his brothers David and Keith in one of the most unusual casting arrangements in film history. In The Long Riders (1980), the Carradines played the Younger brothers alongside three other sets of acting brothers: Stacy and James Keach, Dennis and Randy Quaid, and Christopher and Nicholas Guest.
In 1980, Carradine co-starred with Mark Hamill and Lee Marvin in Samuel Fuller’s The Big Red One, a film about Fuller’s World War II experiences. The film was narrated by his character, who was based on Fuller himself.
He and Cherie Curie co-starred in the science fiction film Wavelength in 1983, in which he played a washed-up rock star who assists extraterrestrials in escaping from a military base. He performed his own compositions for the film, including one named after his daughter, Ever.
In 1983, he appeared in the music video for The Motels’ hit song “Suddenly Last Summer” as the love interest of lead singer Martha Davis. Carradine’s biggest film success to date came in 1984, when he starred as the lead nerd Lewis Skolnick in Revenge of the Nerds. Carradine spent time at The University of Arizona, where the film was shot, participating in rush week to prepare for the role. “No fraternity picked him, convincing Carradine that he was indeed right for the part of the nerd that nobody wanted to claim as their own.”
Carradine played Skolnick again in three sequels, serving as executive producer in the last two. Carradine spoke with Andrew Cassese and Don Gibb at the Niagara Falls Comic Con in 2018. He played Donald Keeble in Max Keeble’s Big Move in 2001. In Mom’s Got a Date with a Vampire, he co-starred with Caroline Rhea in 2000. In 2003, he returned to the role of Sam McGuire in The Lizzie McGuire Movie.
Television
Carradine first appeared on television in 1971, on the classic western series Bonanza. In an episode titled Dark Angel, he appeared on his brother David’s show Kung Fu as Sunny Jim, the mute companion of Serenity Johnson, played by his father John Carradine (1972).
In 1979, he co-starred in Survival of Dana with Melissa Sue Anderson. Carradine portrayed Robert Cohn in the television miniseries adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises in 1984. In 1987, he starred in the HBO miniseries Conspiracy: The Trial of the Chicago 8.
He also appeared as a guest star in the Law & Order: Criminal Intent episode Gone (2005, Season 4, Episode 11). In 2007, he also appeared in Jane Doe, a TV series directed by James A. Contner.
From 2001 to 2004, he portrayed Sam McGuire, the father on Lizzie McGuire. The show, which starred Hilary Duff as Lizzie, was extremely popular among females. The show’s realistic approach to a 13-year-old girl’s problems appealed to parents as well. He co-starred with Nerds co-star Anthony Edwards in the ER episode “Sleepless in Chicago.”
He and former Revenge of the Nerds co-star Curtis Armstrong hosted King of the Nerds on TBS in January 2013, a reality TV series in which a group of nerds compete to see who is the nerdiest. In 2015, he appeared on a fourth season episode of Celebrity Wife Swap with Hall of Fame wide receiver Terrell Owens.
