Robby Krieger The Doors
Krieger joined the Doors in 1965. He became a member as a guitalist like Ray Manzarek the keyboard player, John Densmore the drummer and Jim Morrison the vocalist. During early rehearsal of the Doors, the vocalist, Morrison overheard Krieger playing bottleneck guitar and was so much impressed.
He became overwhelmed and wanted the technique to be featured on every track on their first album. Robby established the Doors to become a successful rock band in the 60’s through his finger-style approach to the electric guitar, his broad musical tastes, and his creative songwriting.
He learned his guitarist and musical skills in the Indian sitarist Ravi Shankar at the Kinnara School of Music in Los Angeles. He sang as the lead vocal with the Doors once in a while, example he lead the song “Runnin’ Blue” and his voice is heard clearly.
Krieger also lead in the singing of the last two Doors albums that were recorded after Morrison passed away, the songs include; Other Voices and Full Circle. Following their colleague’s death, Robby, Ray, and John proceeded as a trio in 1971.
They had released two more albums before the Doors band dissolved in 1973. Despite them parting ways, they regathered in a few years to compose a poetry music that Morrison had recorded soon before he met his death. The poetry music was released in the 1978 album as An American Prayer.
Robby Krieger Guitar
– Magnatone Custom
“This was Robby’s first amp used in the early days of the Doors, but he didn’t use it for any of the recordings on the first album – most of the songs were recorded using rented Fender Twin Reverbs.
The Magnatone was a relatively small combo amp with two 12 inch speakers – most likely model 260.”
– Acoustic 260
“The band signed a deal with Acoustic amps, and both Robby and Ray were using their amps for some time – mostly just live. But Robby grew tired of them and switched to Twin Reverbs from Fender.”
– Fender Twin Reverb(s)
“Robby used these amps in-studio on almost all of the Doors stuff. Some of the amps were customized by Vince Trainor who installed JBL speakers in them.”
– Fender Hot Rod DeVille
“His current amp. He uses two of them on-stage, with either 2×12 or 4×10 cabinets.”
