Robert D. Manfred Jr. is an American lawyer and business executive serving as the tenth commissioner of Major League Baseball. He previously served as MLB’s chief operating officer. Manfred succeeded Bud Selig as a commissioner on January 25, 2015.
He joined MLB full-time in 1998, serving as the Executive Vice President of Economics and League Affairs.
At the end of the 2013 season, Commissioner of Baseball Bud Selig promoted Manfred to a chief operating officer of MLB.
On March 10, Manfred and the league put the possibility of a 162-game season on the table if a deal could be met soon thereafter. That evening, the players’ union accepted an MLB proposal that allowed the two sides to explore the international draft idea and come to a decision on it by July 2022.
Rob Manfred MLB
Robert D. Manfred, Jr. was elected as the 10th Commissioner in the history of Major League Baseball on August 14, 2014, by a vote of the 30 Major League Clubs.
He officially became the sport’s leader on January 25, 2015. On November 15, 2018, Club owners re-elected Manfred to another five-year term through the 2024 season.
Rob Manfred Resign
Contrary to popular belief, Ron Manfred will not be announcing his resignation during Thursday’s press conference. The commissioner is not expected to step down, even though his approval rating falls lower and lower with each passing day.
The most likely outcome of the press conference will be the official delay of Spring Training. Pitchers and catchers were originally scheduled to report on February 14th. With the lockout still going strong, it would make sense for the MLB to move back to the scheduled start time.
Rob Manfred Political Party
Manfred has not revealed his political party but Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said the league will vet any political donations its lobbyists propose, and called the comments that Mississippi Sen.
Cindy Hyde-Smith (R) made about attending a public hanging “at odds” with baseball’s ideals.
Manfred told The Athletic at an event in Manhattan that he regretted MLB did not request with greater dispatch that its $5,000 donation to Hyde-Smith’s campaign be returned.
