Bruce Russell died on Sunday night at the Newstalk ZB central Auckland offices, just before he was to start his shift on-air.
On Monday morning, Newstalk ZB issued a statement confirming his death. “One of our long-time Newstalk ZB hosts, Bruce Russell, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully last night.”

Bruce was New Zealand’s most long-serving and well-liked broadcaster who died unexpectedly.
Russell was in his early 70s at the time of his death. He worked as an overnight host, newsreader, and host of the popular In My Day show on Saturday nights right up until the end.
He died last night, just as he was about to go on air to host Newstalk ZB’s overnight show.
“Bruce Russell, one of our long-time Newstalk ZB hosts, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully last night,” the station said.
One Tweet reveals that he is survived by his family members, Lorna and Andrew.

Bruce Russell died before going on-air peacefully at his office of Newstalk ZB. Russell has not been reported to have died of cardiac arrest so far.
On Monday morning, Newstalk ZB issued a statement confirming his death.
Tim Evans, a producer who worked with Russell from 2007 to 2011, said on Twitter that “there was never a dull-dark moment with Bruce.”
Russell’s career in broadcasting took him all over New Zealand.
Bruce began his career as an ad writer before moving to Timaru to work as an announcer and later as a programmer.
Russell eventually relocated to Auckland and began working night shifts.
He went on to work as a weekend newsreader and host of the In My Day Saturday night show.
One of his friends posted on Twitter, “Oh Bruce! Long time friend and colleague Bruce Russell have passed away. Awful news for all that knew him and listened.
Additionally, he wrote, “I am an outstanding broadcaster with a wicked sense of humor and a wonderful presence at ZB for as long as I can remember. The studio won’t be the same without him.”
