Rina Sawayama is a singer-songwriter and model. She independently released Rina, her debut extended play, in 2017. After joining Dirty Hit, she released her debut studio album, Sawayama, in 2020.
Sawayama has appeared in several fashion campaigns; she is making her acting debut in John Wick: Chapter 4.
She moved to London with her parents at the age of five. Sawayama had trouble understanding her professors and peers since she didn’t know how to communicate in English, but she eventually connected with others through pop music.

Rina Sawayama And Her Relationship With Her Parents
Sawayama was born to her mother, Noriko Sawayama, and her father, whose identity is not disclosed. She is the single child of her parents; her family originally intended to stay in London until she was ten but later ended up staying.
Her parents divorced, and she lived with her mother with a lodger in a flat in London. She shared her room with her mom until she was 15, as they could not afford to rent a spare room. Sawayama and Noriko had a rocky relationship. They fought a lot, and Rina felt like her mom didn’t understand her.
She would run away to go on gigs on her own in foreign countries. The mother and daughter would start fighting at 7 am, and Rina felt embarrassed and frustrated because of her mother’s behavior.
In her 20s, they didn’t talk most of the time. She spent a lot of time becoming upset because she felt misunderstood and burdened by the fact that she was the only child of divorced parents.
Later as she grew up, she realized how her mother had to raise her in a foreign country where everything was new from language, culture, and people. Noriko would sleep at 10 pm and then woke up at 2 am to start working again.
Rina often wondered if they would have had an easier relationship growing up if she didn’t have to work so hard.

Sawayama came out as a pansexual; she previously identified herself as bisexual. During an interview, she stated that she is ready to talk about pansexuality and wants to be honest in her songwriting.
She previously dated a man, and it was complicated for her to publicly come out as a pansexual as she was in a heterosexual relationship. In her song Cherry, she explained how many bi and pan people don’t feel truly queer in heterosexual relationships because it is the truth for them.
