Scott was born on November 30, 1937, to Elizabeth and Colonel Francis Percy Scott in South Shields, County Durham. The Tyneside Cinema, the last existing newsreel theater in the UK, was founded by his great-uncle Dixon Scott, a forerunner of cinema chains who operated a number of theaters in Tyneside.
Scott was raised in a military family, and much of his early years were spent away from home because his father was a Royal Engineers officer. Frank, his older brother, joined the Merchant Navy when he was a young man, so they didn’t communicate much.
At this time, the family moved around a lot, residing in a variety of places in England, Wales, and Germany, including Cumberland.
Tony, Scott’s younger brother, also pursued a career in filmmaking. After the war, the family moved to Teesside after returning to County Durham.
Tony Scott
British filmmaker Anthony David Leighton Scott, who died on August 19, 2012, was well known for his action and thriller movies. Top Gun (1986), Beverly Hills Cop II (1987), Days of Thunder (1990), The Last Boy Scout (1991), True Romance (1993), Crimson Tide (1995), Enemy of the State (1998), Man on Fire (2004), Déjà Vu (2006), and Unstoppable were some of them (2010).
Scott was Sir Ridley Scott’s younger brother, a director himself. Both brothers received their degrees from the Royal College of Art in London, and they belonged to a group of British film directors who made it big in Hollywood after beginning their careers making television commercials. The BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Contribution to Film was given to the brothers in 1995. Also, in 2010, they were presented with the BAFTA Britannia Award for International Contribution to Filmed Entertainment.
Frank Scott
His older brother Frank joined the Merchant Navy when he was a small boy, and they didn’t talk much after that. The family lived in Cumberland, Wales, Germany, and other parts of England throughout this time, moving about regularly. Tony, Scott’s younger brother, also pursued a career in filmmaking. The Scott family eventually relocated to Teesside after returning to County Durham after the war. Frank, Scott’s oldest brother, tragically died at the age of 45 from skin cancer.
