Early Life
Rubin was born on March 10, 1963, in Long Beach, New York. He studied at Long Beach High School where he played in a band called The Pricks and would do school shows.
When Rubin was just a senior in high school, he started Def Jam Records. One of their first releases was a Hose track. He continued being active with the band and did tour shows in different places such as New York and California. But, in 1984, the band would break up after Rubin wanted to focus on the hip hop which he found to be his passion.

He would meet Russell Simmons through a mutual friend and would partner to get Def Jam Records moving in the right direction.
