biography
Rick Fox is of Canadian-Bahamian descent thanks to his parents; Dianne Gerace and Ulrich Fox. He was born Ulrich Alexander Fox on July 24, 1969 in Toronto, Canada and was raised in the Bahamas after his family moved there when he was 4 years old.
Fox attended Kingsway Academy in the Bahamas capital of Nassau, where he discovered his love for basketball. He played for the school’s basketball team before transferring to Warsaw Community High School in Warsaw, Indiana. He played high school basketball for school for two years before being expelled from the Indiana High School Athletic Association for having already completed eight semesters between the Bahamas and Indiana. This meant that Fox did not play high school basketball during his senior year.
However, he still managed to get a basketball scholarship to the University of North Carolina with a major in radio, television and film studies. With the school’s basketball team, the North Carolina Tar Heels, Fox reached great heights both personally and as a team. He led them to the NCAA Final Four in 1991 and was the all-time all-time great player after graduating from school.
Fox’s run with the Celtics lasted until the summer of 1997 when he was released from the team. Last year, he recorded a career-high 15.4 points and 2.2 steals per game. He also made a total of 101 three-point field goals, prompting the Los Angeles Lakers to sign the free agent.
Lakers NBA career
Despite some teams looking to sign, Rick Fox agreed to join the Lakers as he had an interest in acting and Hollywood was just around the corner. However, that distraction didn’t stop him from winning the NBA championships immediately after three years with the team.
With Phil Jackson as coach and ShaquilleO’Neal and Kobe Bryant, the Lakers first defeated the Indiana Pacers in the 2000 NBA Finals, then the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2001 NBA Finals, and finally the New Jersey Nets in the 2002 NBA Finals.
The Lakers’ dominance in the NBA ended the following season, however, they still managed to reach the 2003 Western Conference Semifinals and the 2004 NBA Finals, where they lost to the Detroit Pistons. In the following campaign, Fox was traded back to the Celtics, but he chose to retire instead.
