Born June 29, 1947 in Brooklyn, New York, he began his performing career as a stand-up comedian in the ’70s while working for an ad agency by day. His numerous appearances on Late Night with David Letterman in the ’80s increased his popularity and lead to his own television specials on HBO. He also seemingly refers to long pieces of paper with notes on them during his performances, then extemporaneously delivers his lines. Lewis is lifelong friends with actor/comedian/producer Larry David and reunited with his childhood friend on the television program Curb Your Enthusiasm.
