Richard Hayne is the president and chief executive officer of Urban Outfitters, a clothing retail company based in the United States. Since 1976, he has served as chairman and president of the company, and he has been the CEO since the retirement of Glen Senk in 2012. A net worth of $1.8 billion places Hayne at number 262 on the Forbes 400 list of the 400 wealthiest Americans in 2008, which ranks the 400 richest Americans based on their personal wealth. He is one of the top 40 wealthiest individuals in the state of Pennsylvania. 

He graduated from Lehigh University in 1969 with a bachelor’s degree in anthropology. In 1970, he co-founded Urban Outfitters, Inc. with his ex-wife, Judy Wicks, who served as his business partner. The couple separated in 1970 and divorced a year later, in 1971. The University of Pennsylvania’s campus served as the site of the company’s initial shop. With more than 200 shops under four brands (Urban Outfitters, Free People, Anthropologie, and Terrain), the business has grown significantly over the years (newly launched gardening store). Margaret Hayne, Hayne’s current wife, began working at Urban Outfitters in August 1982.

The company was criticised for doing so too quickly. A new shirt, featuring support for marriage equality, was subsequently released by the business in collaboration with the National Center for Lesbian Rights in 2009 as part of a larger campaign. Hayne has refrained from expressing his own personal opinions on homosexuality.
