The newcomer to the Real Housewives of Orange County confessed that she was “absolutely distraught” when she received the news of the diagnosis.
Noella tells PEOPLE that her “ignorance” of the disease led her to fear that autism was a “death sentence” for the boy at first.
“When you’re a parent, the word autism feels like cancer in many ways,” she told PEOPLE. “It’s just such a large term that it might be intimidating.”
James Jr., who is two years old, was diagnosed earlier this year when his mother realized that the words he had mastered were regressing.
The mother of two initially refused to believe it. As a result, she had James re-evaluated five times before accepting the diagnosis.
“My own personal issue stemmed from a lack of educational opportunities. It did seem like a death sentence to me. I was lamenting the loss of the life that I had hoped for my barely two-year-old son.”
Noella has not only accepted her son’s autism diagnosis but has also dedicated herself to learning more to help him succeed.
“I’ve had to become fluent in him in the last couple of months, and it’s been a great experience,” she said.
