Interview: Runaways Rhenzy Feliz On Alex’s Outsider Status In Season 2

Source: withanaccent.com

Runaways season 1 ended with the kids finally running away from the safety of their parents’ homes after discovering the part they played in the murder of 16 children, and a potentially devastating earthquake right in the heart of Los Angeles. In a set visit this fall, we sat down with Rhenzy Feliz, who plays Alex Wilder, to talk about the de facto leader of the Runaways and his role in the group.

Season 2 begins with the Runaways dealing with the reality of living homeless in Los Angeles (which has the largest unsheltered homeless population in the United States, according to a recent study… we’re #1!), all while being hunted down by their parents, whom they now fear. And for Alex, the only apparently powerless Runaway, there’s the pressure of his friends who seem to expect him to sort out how they’re going to live now. So we asked Feliz, does he feel the others are putting him in this position because he is the only one of the group without powers?

“I don’t know if it’s the fact that he doesn’t have powers, I feel like it has to do with the fact that he’s sort of led the charge in the first season. And now they’re homeless with nowhere to go, with no money, with nothing to do, it’s kind of put him in this bad position.

He’s made some questionable choices [In Season 1], so it’s like they don’t know if they can completely trust him. And yeah maybe it has to do the fact that maybe they feel like they’re putting themselves in a lot of danger and putting themselves in the middle of the action and he’s less so. But I feel like in this season especially, you’re going to get to see Alex do a lot more. Kind of prove that he does have a spot with the Runaways. And I think that’ll be really apparent to see.”

Perhaps it’s this pressure that has Alex separating from the group a bit, at least in the first few episodes. “In the first season he was trying to get the whole group back together,” says Feliz. “Now he’s leaving the group to go do something separate, kind of this separate life that he has now. Well, without the Runaways.

While they’re trying to figure out their powers, while they’re trying to figure out about all of this, he’s sort of creating a relationship over there. And as the season goes on, it’s really interesting the way that plays out and what that does to him as a person. How it kind of shapes him from then on out.”

Does absence make the heart grow fonder? Will we see Alex’s importance to the Runaways acknowledged by the team as they begin to see just how much he brings to the crew, even without his powers? “I feel like, yeah! I hope so at least,” Feliz agrees. “They say something that implies the fact that they do miss Alex. They’re like, ‘Wow, maybe we do need this little skinny kid on our team.’ And so it’s nice to be needed, is I guess how Alex feels. I think they realize that maybe they do need him maybe once he is kind of separate.”

Runaways season 2 drops in its entirety on Hulu on December 21, 2018.
