Remembering Pamela Blair: A Broadway Star’s Unforgettable Legacy

Broadway has lost a shining star as Pamela Blair, celebrated for her roles in All My Children and A Chorus Line, passed away at the age of 73 after a long and courageous battle with illness.

The multi-talented actress, singer, and dancer bid her final farewell at her home in Phoenix, Arizona, on Sunday, leaving behind a legacy of memorable performances. Pamela Blair will forever be remembered for her iconic portrayal of Val, a role she originated in the renowned Broadway musical, A Chorus Line.

Her A Chorus Line co-star, Baayork Lee, took to Facebook to express her sorrow, saying, “I am very sad to say my Sagittarian sister Pam Blair has gone to play with her [A Chorus Line] colleagues among the clouds.” Lee’s touching tribute concluded with heartfelt words, “You are free now Pammie so dance, dance, dance among the stars.”

Born on December 5, 1949, in Vermont, Pamela Blair embarked on her career as a stage actress and dancer, making her debut on Broadway in the production of Promises, Promises in 1968. Over the years, she graced the stage as an ensemble cast member in notable shows like Sugar and Seesaw.

In 1974, Pamela Blair secured the role of Curley’s wife in Of Mice And Men, standing as the sole female presence in the performance. It was also in the same year that she left an indelible mark on Broadway as the original Valerie Clarke in A Chorus Line. Blair had actively contributed to the character’s development during the show’s workshops, and the role was partially inspired by her own life.

Her solo performance of “Dance: Ten, Looks: Three” in A Chorus Line garnered immense acclaim, highlighting the character’s humorous take on plastic surgery.

Apart from her stage successes, Pamela Blair ventured into the television industry, making appearances in beloved American soap operas such as Loving, Another World, Ryan’s Hope, and All My Children, which earned her a Daytime Emmy nomination in 1987. She showcased her versatility with roles on popular shows like Law & Order, The Cosby Show, The Days And Nights Of Molly Dodd, and Sabrina The Teenage Witch.

Blair’s talents extended to the silver screen, with notable appearances in films like Woody Allen’s Mighty Aphrodite, Annie, and 21 Grams.

In 1984, Pamela Blair married TV director Don Scardino, but their marriage came to an end in 1991.

The official account of A Chorus Line composer Marvin Hamlisch paid tribute to the late actress, saying, “We are saddened to hear that Pamela Blair, the original ‘Val’ in A Chorus Line, has passed away. The character was loosely based on her own life, and she was a part of the musical from the very first workshop. Our thoughts are with her loved ones and fans.”

Remembering their shared birthdays, co-star Baayork Lee fondly recalled the vibrant and colorful character Pamela portrayed, and the way she mesmerized the audience with the iconic Val monologue. Blair’s presence on stage was electric, and she left an unforgettable impression on everyone, even as a woman standing at the edge of the orchestra shouting, “Wash your mouth out.”

The world of entertainment has lost a true talent, but Pamela Blair’s legacy will forever live on in the hearts of her loved ones, colleagues, and fans.
