REDUCING THE DIFFERENCE OF POOR TEACHING METHODOLOGY ON STUDENTS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCES USING LEARNER CENTERED APPROACH

ABSTRACT

This study looked into the problems facing the Nigerian education system. These problems are also the causes of poor performances among secondary school students in Nigeria. Some of the causes of poor performances among students includes; lack of qualified teachers, poor attitude of the government and influential people towards secondary school education, lack of empowerment and motivation for students and teachers, faulty curriculum, poor administration and many other factors. Having highlighted the causes of poor performances among students, the researcher proffered better solutions to solve these problems confronting secondary school education and the chief solution is introducing ‘COIP4C’ an educative approach that is learner centered which helps children to be self empowered and self actualized.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0  INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The Andragogical method of teaching is child- centered method, that emphasizes experiences and knowledge. The focal point of activity in the Andragogical method of education is the child. The Andragogist is like a mid- wife who helps the expectant mother and the unborn baby to ensure and achieve safe delivery.
The mid-wife will do everything within her limit to assist the pregnant woman but could not assume the position of the woman nor take her place, she will advise, encourage and motivate her into action but cannot do the action by herself. She could protect the privacy of the woman. to make her comfortable and shy free to open up herself for the task before them. She can prevent men from entering into the maternity room where the delivery takes place.

EFFECT OF MOTIVATION ON STUDENTS ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND INTEREST IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL BIOLOGY IN MAKURDI METROPOLIS

Motivation is force used within the educational setting to encourage student learning and understanding. Motivation and achievement have long been recognized to have a close cause effect relationship on ability and achievement. The anticipated relationship is that, the higher the motivation ability the higher the expected level that is why the issue of motivation of students and the impact of academic performance are considered as important aspects of effective learning. Based on this background, this research investigated the effect of motivation on the academic achievement and interest of students in secondary school biology in Makurdi metropolis. Five schools were randomly selected from among the secondary schools in Makurdi metropolis. The study made use of a quasi-experimental design of the equivalent control group. The finding revealed that the students taught using motivation achieved more and those taught without motivation achieved less. Both male and female students exposed to motivational approach performed competitively better in the achievement test. There was also no significant difference in the mean interest rating of male and female students. This study has therefore shown that biology is one of such areas where the use of motivation may be beneficial.

THE EFFECT OF TASK SIZE ON SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT IN BIOLOGY IN USHONGO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, BENUE STATE

The National Policy on Education emphasizes the importance of task on the academic achievement of students and mandates that the final grading of a learner in any course of study must take into account all their performances over a period of time. The problem of the practice of assigning task to students and how it affects their academic achievement calls for attention. Therefore, this research work is aimed at determining the effect of task size on the students’ achievement in Biology in Ushongo Local Government Area of Benue State of Nigeria. The target population for the study comprised all the Biology students in senior secondary schools in Ushongo Local Government Area of Benue State. All students who offer Biology in Ushongo Local Government Area of Benue State constituted the population. The quasi-experimental design was chosen and used for this study. It employed the simple and non-tedious; and bulky and tedious control group. The sample consisted of 70 senior secondary (SS II) students from two classes (35 in each class) of the two selected schools in Ushongo Local Government Area. Schools were chosen by probability sampling (balloting: withdrawal-replacement procedure).  The sample for the study is drawn by random Sample technique. Mean and standard deviation was used for answering the research questions. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The results show that the group taught with high task size achieve higher in their achievement test. This research work has serious implications for biology teachers, teacher trainers, curriculum developers, and other stakeholders in biology education.
