Raymond Lee Murray (October 12, 1917 – April 9, 2003) was a six-season Major League Baseball catcher. He was a member of the Cleveland Indians from 1948 through 1951, when they won the World Series. From 1951 to 1953, he was a member of the Philadelphia Athletics, then in 1954, the Baltimore Orioles. Ray was a gifted catcher with a powerful bat as a baseball player. In 1948, as a rookie, he caught Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Feller for the Cleveland Indians and earned a World Series ring. Ray’s greatest weapon was his cannon of a right arm, and despite having a powerful bat, he allowed very few stolen bases in his brief career, rapidly earning a reputation as a gun slinger at the plate. Ray was renowned for his shenanigans with the umpires, which earned him the moniker
“Deacon” because of the manner he preached to them. Ray was dismissed from a game after stopping in the midst of a game and removing all of his catchers gear to kneel at home plate and pray to the Lord to grant the umpire vision since he must be blind. Ray resided in Ft. Worth, Texas, after his baseball career ended. He was a warrant officer for the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Department for many years before retiring. Ray had two children, Buddy and Jill, and spent many years playing minor league baseball. During the 1970s, he was the president of the Forest Hill Youth Association and coached numerous pony and colt league boys teams. Ray was also a skilled golfer who maintained a scratch handicap well into his fifties. He was a longstanding member of Glen Garden Country Club in Ft. Worth and a club championship winner.
