Randy Gregory is best known as an American football player and a defensive end for the Dallas Cowboys. The footballer has gained notoriety on and off the pitch for his frequent violations, suspensions and drug addiction. Before being drafted into the NFL, he played college football at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in the state of Nebraska. But there is still more to know about him.

Biography of Randy Gregory

Randy Gregory was born on November 23, 1992 in Jacksonville, Florida. Growing up, he attended Hamilton Southeastern High School in Indiana, where he played both football and basketball.

According to records, as a junior he made 17 sacks and 92 tackles. During his senior season, he was ranked as one of Indiana State’s top 15 players, followed by several scholarship offers for the future Dallas Cowboys defensive player. Proving to be a true athlete, he also attracted the interest of Division 1 high school basketball.

After high school, Randy Gregory moved on to college at Arizona Western College (2011-2012). In his freshman year, he made 9 sacks and 82 tackles. Unfortunately, he broke his leg which caused him to miss the 2012 season.

The athlete then enrolled at Purdue University, but was not admitted because he did not meet the University’s academic eligibility standards. However, he was later admitted to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In his freshman year at Nebraska-Lincoln, he played in 10 of 13 games in which he had 10.5 sacks, 64 tackles and one return interception for a touchdown. This earned him Defensive MVP for the Nebraska title.

Although still praised and acclaimed as a college player, he chose to skip his senior season and playing season and enter the 2015 NFL Draft.

Career

Randy Gregory was drafted in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys as a defensive end. Although he showed immense potential during pre-season, he was ruled out for four matches when he suffered an ankle injury. He returned to the field in Week 7 in their game against the New York Giants. However, Randy’s career has not been easy.

On February 19, 2016, after failing Randy Gregory was suspended for the first four games of the season. After a few months, the athlete failed another drug test, after which he went to a treatment center for help. He was then suspended an additional 10 games and dropped from the team’s roster.

In November of that year, he reportedly failed another drug test and faced a one-year suspension to add to the 14-game suspension he was facing. He was considered unfit to return to the Cowboys until December 2019. The NFL not only suspended Gregory from games but also banned him from contacting his Cowboys teammates or coaches. This led to a seemingly bad ending for the defender.

He then got a 9-to-5 job at GenescoSports Enterprises as he tried to balance his workouts and therapy, but he soon quit and resumed his impulsive behaviors. His attorney, Daniel Moskowitz, later moved in with him to help the athlete overcome his addiction.

Being the fighter that he is, Gregory has treatment again; this time in California, where marijuana is legal. There he learned to understand and counter his triggers in order to overcome his addiction. He also found a replacement in boxing and meditation. After a few months of rehabilitation, Randy Gregory was finally able to pull through, but he didn’t immediately ask to be reinstated in the NFL until he was sure he was ready.

His teammates helped put in a good word for his return and on July 17, 2018, after his June 21 appeal hearing, the NFL announced that Randy Gregory would be conditionally reinstated.
