SINGAPORE: After Member of Parliament Raeesah Khan (WP-Sengkang) acknowledged lying in Parliament about a rape case she said was mismanaged by the police, the Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE) said it was “shocked and dismayed.”
Khan first brought up the subject on August 3 during a Workers’ Party motion on women’s empowerment.
She claimed that she accompanied a 25-year-old woman to file a police report three years ago. It was reported that the victim had come out crying because a police officer had allegedly made comments about her clothing and drinking.
On Monday, Ms. Khan confirmed in Parliament that she was “not present with the survivor in the police station as I described” during the incident.
She also expressed regret for relaying the rape victim’s narrative without her permission.
