The second child of civil rights activist Malcolm X and his wife Betty Shabazz is Qubilah Shabazz. She was born in Queens, New York, on December 25, 1960. Qubilah Shabazz is an author and activist who has spent her entire life working for social justice.
She was accused of hiring an assassin to kill Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan in 1995 as payback for her father’s murder, but the accusations were later withdrawn. Since that time, Qubilah Shabazz has persisted in her work as an activist and participated in a number of programs designed to advance racial and socioeconomic equality.

She wed in December 1996, but by the end of the following month, the union had broken down.
Malcolm, Shabazz’s ten-year-old son, was transferred to live with her mother Betty in Yonkers, New York, while she underwent therapy. On June 1st, 1997—two years later—Malcolm started a fire in his grandmother’s flat. Betty Shabazz had burns covering 80% of her body and passed away three weeks later as a result of her wounds.
