According to the police force’s official website, Russian troops opened fire on the car of Brent Renaud and another journalist, Juan Arredondo, in Irpin, near the capital.
Juan told Italian journalist Annalisa Camilli in an interview before being rushed to the hospital for surgery that his companion had been hit in the neck and remained on the ground earlier on Sunday.
Mr. Arredondo had been wounded in the lower back when halted at a Russian checkpoint, Ms. Camilli added, and she was at the hospital when Mr. Arredondo arrived.
He informed her that he didn’t know much about the fellow American journalist, whom he named Mr. Renaud, a friend.
They were shooting migrants leaving the area when they were shot while approaching a checkpoint; he informed Ms. Camilli.
He added that the driver turned around, but the firing continued.
Juan said that he was taken to the hospital by ambulance and that Mr. Renaud had been left there.
