On February 23, 2012, Phillip Phillips was selected as one of the Top 25 semi-finalists, securing his place in the anticipated Top 13. Throughout the competition, people compared Phillips’ distinctive performance style to that of well-known performer Dave Matthews, and he even gave a stage performance of Matthews’ song “The Stone.”
When asked about Phillips’ replication of his method, Dave Matthews cheerfully stated that he didn’t mind and jokingly quipped that Phillips could replace him in his own band.
Stevie Nicks, Phillips’ teacher, also lauded the exceptional talent of his student and said that, after hearing him perform Jonny Lang’s “Still Rainin’,” in particular, he would have been a good fit for Fleetwood Mac.
Phillips persevered and delivered outstanding performances despite facing numerous challenges on the road to winning American Idol, including many hospitalizations for what doctors initially suspected to be kidney stones.
During his Top 3 performance, he enthralled the crowd with an emotional rendition of Bob Seger’s “We’ve Got Tonight.” One of the best performances in American Idol history is generally cited as Phillips’ rendition of Damien Rice’s “Volcano,” which she gave during the Top 4 phase.
Amazingly, Phillips never lost a round during the competition, and in the championship round, where 132 million votes were cast, he overcame Jessica Sanchez to take home the trophy.
