Penton was blocking traffic, standing outside his cruiser with hazard lights on, when his police vehicle struck him.

He was taken to Baylor Medical Center in Dallas, with patrols escorting the ambulance, but then Penton was pronounced dead. Officer Penton joined the department in February 2019 and was assigned to the Northeast Patrol Division. The department said Penton had just completed the training and became a full-fledged officer in October.

“We have a department that is grieving. We have a family that is grieving,” Chief Garcia said Saturday morning.

Officers lined up outside the hospital to greet Penton as they removed his body and took him to the medical examiner. Police said slippery and icy roads were not a factor in the accident, and the road reopened on Saturday morning.

Penton leaves behind a wife who is pregnant with his first child, said Dallas Police Association president Mike Mata.

Penton was hired in February 2019 and assigned to the Northeast Patrol Division, according to the police department.

“Our hearts are heavy right now,” said Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia. “This young officer had a bright future ahead of him. We asked the community to join us as we pray [for] the officer’s family. We would also like to extend that prayer to the brave men and women of this great department.”

Penton attended Rodgers State University in Claremore, Oklahoma, graduating in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in administration of justice, according to the school.

He had also been a member of the college men’s soccer team and began his college career in the sport in 2011.

“My thoughts and prayers go out to Mitch’s family and friends. On our show we always talk about our Hillcat Family, “said men’s soccer coach Derek Larkin in a written statement.” Mitchell represented what it really means to be a Hillcat with his hard work and dedication to our program. I will always remember his contagious smile and his kind soul. He will always be a part of the Hillcat Nation and our soccer family. ”

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson said in a written statement that Dallas was mourning the loss of the officer:

“He died too young, but the measure of a life is not longevity, but what someone does with the time they have. And this officer spent his time serving our great city in an inherently dangerous job,” Johnson said. “We will always be in his debt and always heartbroken by this tragedy. Today I am praying for his family, friends, and colleagues. I know that our city will provide them with love and support as we seek justice.”

Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a statement Saturday morning regarding the death of the Dallas officer:

“Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of the Dallas Police Department officer who was killed in the line of duty for him this morning,” Governor Abbott said. “This terrible loss is a solemn reminder of the risks our brave law enforcement officers face while serving and protecting our communities. Cecilia and I ask our fellow Texans to join us in lifting up the officer’s family and the entire Dallas Police Department in prayer during this difficult time. ”

Carolyn King Arnold, a member of the Dallas City Council, issued the following statement on Saturday.

“I would like to express my sincere thoughts, prayers and condolences to the family of Dallas Police Officer Mitchell Penton # 11654. Our hearts are deeply saddened by this tragedy and we extend our prayers to Chief Eddie Garcia, Northeast Patrol Division, and to The entire Dallas Police Department family for the loss of their fellow officer. We thank him for his decision to commit to public service and safety in the city of Dallas. We thank him and his family for their sacrifice. May God bless to his family and the Dallas Police Department. ”
