biography
Philip Alfred Mickelson was born on June 16,1970 in San Diego, California to Phil Sr and Mary Mickelson. His father was a naval fighter and commercial pilot while his mother was a nurse. He has a sister Tina and a brother Tim. Also raised in San Diego, Mickelson, who appears to have been born with golf genes, began hitting golf balls before he was two years old. At the age of three he tried unsuccessfully to run away from home to play golf with his father at a local golf course. Mickelson attended high school at the University of San Diego and later Arizona State University, where he majored in psychology.
Phil Mickelson career success
His golf career started in his youth as an amateur. Although naturally right-handed, Mickelson learned to play golf left-handed. Mickelson’s fierce and aggressive talent on the golf course began to manifest itself as a teenager. Not only has he won 34 San Diego Junior Golf Association titles, he has also won three consecutive Rolex Player of the Year awards from the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) and an Arizona State University Full Golf Scholarship.
While at ASU, Mickelson became the first left-hander to win the 1990 US amateur title. That same year he also won his first PGA Tour tournament as an amateur, a feat accomplished by only three other golfers in PGA history. As a collegiate golfer, he won three NCAA singles championships and three Haskins Awards before turning professional at the age of 22.
Despite his powerful swings throughout the game, some of Mickelson’s risky decisions on the golf course cost him great victories, to the point that he was once described as the “best golfer who never won a major”. But that ended when he surprised fans and critics alike with a dramatic win at the 2004 Masters Golf Tournament. After winning three Masters titles (2004, 2006, 2010), a PGA championship in 2005 and an Open Championship in 2013, he became one of the most dominant golfers in the world.
