Peter’s first investment was the establishment of Thiel Capital Management. This startup was done through funds from family and friends. Its first venture was Confinity in the year 1998.
In 1999 Thiel observed a gap when it came to making payments online. He wanted to create a digital wallet so as to increase consumer convenience. This was the birth of PayPal. PayPal later went public in 2002 and it was acquired by eBay at a cost of $1.5 billion in the same year. Thiel, however, continued to be its CEO until the completion of the sale.
Having sold PayPal Thiel used some of the proceeds to invest in other firm called Clarium Capital Management. This is a worldwide macro hedge fund that invests in currencies interest rates commodities and also in equities.
The company made a return of 65.6% when Thiel predicted that the U.S dollar would decline. It was later affected by the collapse of financial markets in 2009. Clarium Capital failed to rebound hence a large number of investors pulled out.
With experience in PayPal, Thiel thought that the same idea it used to combat fraud the same idea could be used in other contexts. For instance, the same idea could be used to fight terrorism. This made Thiel establish a data mining company called Palantir Technologies. The firm was incorporated in 2003. Palantir Technologies is a large data analysis company that provides data mining services to government intelligence agencies.
Thiel organized other investors and together they established the Founders Fund. This is a venture capital fund that is based in San Francisco. Apart from Facebook Peter Thiel has continued to invest in other startups either personally or through the Founders Fund. These startups include LinkedIn, Slide.com, Spotify, Yammer among others.
