In 1992 and 1993, Peter Bolesaw Schmeichel MBE (Danish pronunciation: [ped sml]; born 18 November 1963) was named the “World’s Best Goalkeeper” by FIFA. Schmeichel resigned from professional football after a successful career as a goalkeeper for Danish club FC Copenhagen. He is most known for his most successful years with English team Manchester United, when he led the club to the 1999 UEFA Champions League title, completing the treble, and for his performance with Denmark in the 1992 UEFA Euro Championship. In addition to his imposing stature (he stands 1.91 metres (6 feet 3 inches) tall and weighs about 105 kilogrammes (16 pounds 7 ounces) during his playing days, Schmeichel was known for donning specially manufactured large football jerseys (he wore size XXXL football shirts during his playing days). Schmeichel scored 11 goals throughout his professional career, including one for the United States national team, which was unusual for a goalie. He also has the distinction of being the most capped player for the Danish national team, having appeared in 129 games between 1987 and 2001. As well as representing his nation in Euro 92, he also represented them at the FIFA World Cup in 1998 and three more European Championship events. In all, he led the national team for 30 games.
