Peter Lavelle Career
Lavelle has written for publications such as Asia Times Online, The Moscow Times, The National Interest, and Current History. According to the New York Times, Lavelle previously worked as a stringer for United Press International’s Moscow bureau and has contributed to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. Lavelle was also the creator of the electronic newsletter Untimely Thoughts.
RT host
Lavelle moved to Russia in 1997 and began working for RT (then known as Russia Today) in 2005. “I am proud of my work,” he told Julia Ioffe in a 2010 article for Columbia Journalism Review, adding that he avoids western colleagues based in Moscow.
He informed Ioffe that they despise RT. In The New York Times in 2008, Stephen Heyman wrote that Lavelle was one of RT’s journalists who “said they were earnestly trying to tell Russia’s story,” and that Lavelle said, “No one is telling me what to say.”
In an August 2010 online interview, Peter Lavelle characterized his journalism as “dissent” in the American tradition, which he claimed is being forsaken in its birthplace.
He denied Kremlin spin-doctoring allegations, saying RT’s main goal is to “ask our audience one simple thing: Question More.” Walter Isaacson, chairman of the Broadcasting Board of Governors of the United States government, stated in 2010 that his organization must fight its “enemies,” which he defined as Iran’s Press TV, China’s CCTV, and RT.
According to Peter Lavelle, Isaacson “doesn’t have anything to do with journalism,” but is a supporter of a “media war” aimed at pushing “the US foreign policy agenda” onto an increasingly skeptical world.
Lavelle told the Christian Science Monitor in 2012 about Julian Assange’s World Tomorrow interview program for RT, “we liked a lot of the Wikileaks revelations.”
It was very much in line with what RT has been reporting about the Arab Spring and the US and its allies’ duplicitous policies all along.” He referred to it as a “soft power coup for Russia.”
In July 2014, Lavelle was interviewed by CNN’s Chris Cuomo, who accused her of being obsessed with “clearing Russia from culpability” in the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 and acting more like a “representative of Russia” than a journalist.
Lavelle accused the US State Department of relying on Twitter and YouTube for evidence, while Cuomo insisted the US relied on its own publicly released intelligence.
On a July 23, 2014, edition of CrossTalk, he insisted, “I’m not a conspiracy theorist, and I never allow conspiracy theorists on my program,” but then speculated that the Ukrainian government had brought down the plane to gain worldwide sympathy.
According to the PolitiFact website, several 9/11 conspiracy theorists have appeared on CrossTalk. In October 2014, Lavelle attended a Valdai Club meeting in Sochi with domestic and foreign journalists, as well as Vladimir Putin.
He was quoted as telling Russian President Vladimir Putin that he was “the most popular man in modern history” and was “viewed as a sort of savior” by a large portion of the world’s population. Putin paid a visit to RT’s Moscow headquarters in June of the previous year.
“Opinion polls show that the opposition in Russia is very small”, Lavelle told him. “What kind of opposition would you like to see?”
