Dame Penelope Anne Constance (née Penelope Anne Constance) Penelope Anne Constance Hatfield Keith, DBE, DL (born 2 April 1940) is an English actress best known for her performances in the British comedies The Good Life and To the Manor Born. She started her professional acting career in repertory theatre before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1963. She was also a key figure in the development of the Chichester Festival Theatre, which she helped to establish. For her work in the theatre, she has appeared in Alan Ayckbourn’s The Norman Conquests in 1974 and Michael Frayn’s Donkeys’ Years in 1976, the latter of which earned her an Olivier Award for Best Comedy Performance. Following a successful start to her television career in the 1960s, she became a well-known face in the United Kingdom in the 1970s, when she starred as Margot Leadbetter in the sitcom The Good Life (1975-1978), for which she was nominated for a BAFTA TV Award for Best Performance in a Light Entertainment Program in 1977. Her performance in the television version of The Norman Conquests earned her the BAFTA TV Award for Best Actress in 1978. Later, she appeared as Audrey Forbes-Hamilton in the BBC television series To The Manor Born (1979-1981), which drew more than 20 million viewers. She has since retired from acting. Six more comedy shows in which she starred as the main character aired throughout the 1980s and 1990s. 

Having begun acting in the late 1990s, she has mostly worked in the theatre, appearing in plays such as Keith Waterstone’s Good Grief (1998), Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit (2004), Richard Everett’s Entertaining Angels (2006), and Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest (1998). (2007). Following the death of Lord Olivier as head of the Actors’ Benevolent Fund in 1989, she took over the position. Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the 2014 New Year Honours for services to the arts and to charity. She was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1990, Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2007, and Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the 2014 New Year Honours for services to the arts and to charity.
