American billionaire hedge fund manager, naturalist, and philanthropist Paul Tudor Jones II was born on September 28, 1954.

Jones requested an introduction to trade from his relative William Dunavant Jr. in 1976 after receiving his degree from the University of Virginia.

Dunavant served as the CEO of one of the biggest cotton merchants in the world, Dunavant Enterprises.

Dunavant dispatched Jones to New Orleans to speak with commodity dealer Eli Tullis. Some of the biggest cotton dealers in the world were represented by Tullis. Jones was taken on by Tullis, who also helped him learn how to trade cotton futures at the New York Cotton Exchange.

After a night of partying in New Orleans, Jones passed out at his desk, which led Eli Tullis to dismiss him. Years later, from August 1992 to June 1995, Jones chaired the New York Cotton Exchange after serving as its treasurer in 1986.
