Career
Reid started his first employment as a trainee installer at the Department of Posts and Telegraphs. The job involved connecting landline telephones to businesses and homes and climbing telephone poles on the roadside to run lines. In 2005, Reid started his second employment working for Eircom as an underground cable jointer and thereafter qualified as a technician.
In 2010, he retired from Eircom as an executive director of networks and operations to become leader of corporate affairs for Trócaire, an Irish humanitarian aid organization. He later moved to the civil service, where he performed as chief operations officer at the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform.
In this role, he was the leader of the development, implementation, and management of the government’s reform program across the civil and public service. His big assignment was to secure a saving of €1 billion in the second round of public service pay cuts, a result of the Haddington Road Agreement, a tough proposition as ASTI nullified its findings.
In the year 2014, he was appointed chief executive of the Fingal County Council. on April 2, 2019, He was appointed to the position of Director-General at the Health Service Executive where he leads more than 117K staff who provide a wide range of health services across Ireland.
On June 27, 2022, Reid announced that he would be retiring from his position as Director-General of the Health Service Executive at the end of the year “to spend more time with his family.” He quit on October 3, 2022, and was substituted by Chief Financial Officer Stephen Mulvany on a temporary basis until a permanent replacement was found.
On February 28, 2023, it was reported that Reid had been appointed Chairperson of the Citizens’ Assembly on Drugs Use in Ireland.
