Paul Bomani Biography

Paul Bomani (Paul Lazaro Bomani) was born on 1st January 1925 in Musoma, Tanzania.He is a Tanzanian politician and a former ambassador to the United States and Mexico.

Paul Bomani  Education Background

He attended Nassa Primary School in Mwanza from 1936 to 1939. He later joined Ikizu SDA Secondary School and Teacher Training College, from where he graduated in 1945.In 1954, he obtained a diploma from Loughborough College in Leicester, UK.He has a masters degree in International Relations.

Paul Bomani Career

In 1950 Paul Bomani was elected the President of the Lake Province Cotton Growers Association, the precursor to Tanzania’s world famous co-operative movement.

In 1952 he was made president of the Sukuma Union, which brought together Tanzania’s largest ethnic group.The union dissolved itself to join the Tanganyika African Association (TAA).Bomani became the TAA chairman for Lake Province.

In 1954 Paul Bomani was appointed the British Governor General as one of the first African members of the Legislative Council (Legco).

In 1955 he was appointed general manager of the Victoria Federation of Co-operative Unions, a cotton ginning and marketing organisation responsible for most of the development and prosperity in the Lake Zone.

In 1958 he became a member of the Rammage Constitutional Reform Committee that established universal suffrage in Tanganyika. In 1960 he became the Minister for Natural Resources and Co-operative Development.

Between 1962 and 1970, Paul Bomani served as Governor of the World Bank, attending annual meetings of the bank and the IMF. He was also member of the Makerere University and Nairobi University councils in 1965.

Between 1972 and 1983 Paul Bomani was Tanzania’s ambassador to Washington, DC.Between 1975 to 1982 he was a councillor on the American University Advisory Board.

  • He is married to Kessi Hildegard and they have nine children.

He died on 1st April 2005 after he was suddenly taken ill with brain haemorrhage.
