Celebrity Big Brother Paddy Doherty interview: ‘I haven’t got a clue how I won’

Congratulations! How do you feel after winning? And why do you think you won?
“I swear to God, as true as my wife, I haven’t got a clue how I won. We’re travellers. I went in to Big Brother, and I swear to God I thought I’d be in there a week. One week, I’d last a week, and lovely jubbly – I’m in, I’m out.

“I don’t know how I won. How do you win something when you’ve been yourself? Not false. I had no gameplan – I’m a sausage! Either people like me or they don’t like me.”

Do you think your time on Big Brother and your win will give people more of an insight into the travelling community?
“When they asked me to come on this programme it was a gamble. I wouldn’t say I have a great name, but I have a name like a racehorse in my own territory, and if I went downhill I was opening the door to everyone screwing me and screwing my children – ‘You clown’. I said, ‘Look, I’m going for it’ and thank God I went all the way.

“And thank God you know about travellers now – like anyone, there’s good and bad among us all. There’s not halos round all of our heads. If you look at me – f**king hell, if a man hits me I’m going to hit him back. If a man hits you, you’re going to hit him back.

“But we’re travellers – we’re not even second class, we’re third class in the country people’s eyes. When I say country people, forgive me for saying that word – it’s like using ‘traveller’ or ‘gypsy’, it’s not an insulting word. But we’re third class, we’re nothing.”

So do you think your Big Brother win has changed that?
“It’ll put us equal. We’re as good as you. What you can do, I can do. You can read but I can’t read, what difference does that make? But I can go get a living and you can get a living. You’ve got 9-5 and I’ve got gardening, rubbish removing.”

You won Celebrity Big Brother – do you consider yourself a celebrity?
“Far from it. I’m nobody! How can they call me a celebrity? I’m a winner, but how am I a celebrity? I’ve done nothing. I’ve achieved nothing in life, I’ve done nothing in life. I swear to God, if you win the lottery, you win it for yourself. You win Celebrity Big Brother as a traveller, you win it for all your breed – English, Irish, Welsh and Scots.

“If you win it, you win it for all your breed, who’s nothing to do with you – a different generation. I won it for them. The members of the public won it for me. I would be nothing without my woman – if my woman weren’t there, it would mean nothing to me.”

Were you surprised that so many people came to the finale to support you?
“When I was on Big Brother, all I was hoping for was just my wife to come and see me, and my sons. I thought I might shame them. The understanding in the travelling community of what I’ve done… When I dressed up as the dog, oh! I was saying to God, ‘Please don’t do this to me’. And I go, ‘Woof, woof, woof’… oh! I’m sorry if I disappointed people but I swear to God I was myself in there.”
