Pablo Castro Murder Update: John Henry Ramirez Death Row Execution

John Henry Ramirez had been on death row since 2008 over the 2004 murder and robbery. He was then under alcohol and drugs alongside two other women.

In August, Ramirez sued prison officials for prohibiting his advisor pray over him. As a devout Protestant, John wanted his spiritual advisor to lay his hands on him during his execution.

The Supreme Court had voted 8-1 in favor of his request, while John Roberts’s justice stated the plea is perhaps the latest iteration in an eighteen-year pattern of evasion.

As a Protestant, the laying of hands of his spiritual advisor is a symbolic act to confer a spiritual blessing. Previously the court denied his request to have his pastor place his hands on him during his execution.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court finally sided with a Texas death row inmate, Ramirez, seeking to have his spiritual advisor be allowed to pray out loud and touch him during his execution.

John Henry Ramirez had been on death row since 2008 over the murder of a convenience store worker nearly 20 years ago and further robbing him of $1.25.

The high court’s 8-1 decision won’t spare thirty-seven-year-old Ramirez from being executed by lethal injection after stabbing Corpus Christi Convenience store worker Pablo Castro 29 times in a 2004 robbery.

Initially, the justice’s vote denied the request of Ramirez on allowing the spiritual advisor to be present in the death chamber even without speaking or touching the inmate.

It was rejected as allowing Ramirez to be touched could interfere with the IV lines that carry the drugs used to carry out the execution.

At the murder, Ramirez was under alcohol and drugs along with two other women, namely Angela Rodriguez and Christina Chavez.

They smoked weed, took prescription pills, cocaine, and drank vodka that night. In a BBC interview, he said that Rodriguez was fighting with a man, and he got involved in it trying to separate them.

Pablo was a married man and had nine children. He had worked at the convenience store for more than a decade when Ramirez brutally killed him.

If Ramirez is executed over 2004 robbery and murder, he would be the first inmate put to death this year in Texas, also the fourth in the US.
