History of the Red River Rivalry

The Top 12 contest between the No. 3-ranked Longhorns and the No. 12-ranked Sooners has a long-standing history dating back to October 10, 1990, when they first encountered each other.

The Red River Rivalry, the Red River Showdown, or the Red River Shootout, has seen 118 games where the Texas Longhorns have won 63 while the Sooners have been victorious in 50 games. Five games ended in a draw.

The biggest victory in the rivalry has been claimed by Oklahoma in 2003. They beat their neighbouring rivals 65-13.

The rivalry name comes from ‘Red River,’ which acts as the border between the states of Oklahoma and Texas.

Since 1932, the game has been held at the Cotton Bowl annually, and the tradition of having the contest on October’s second Saturday started in 1934.

The event has been carried out once a year without any interruption since 1929.
