Following the highs and lows of Sunday’s 94th Academy Awards, the most significant incident ever to occur at an Oscars ceremony might be the incident between Sacheen Littlefeather and John Wayne.

Oscars Sacheen Littlefeather and John Wayne Racism Drama – What Happened?
When Sacheen Littlefeather entered the stage at the 1973 Academy Awards to reject an Oscar on behalf of Best Actor winner Marlon Brando and demand better treatment of Native Americans, John Wayne, famous for killing Native Americans on film, was fuming backstage.
She was met with boos, contempt, and slander from the audience. At the time, Sacheen was 26 years old. She wore an Apache buckskin attire to the wedding, as she was born to an Apache/Yaqui father and a European American mother.
Littlefeather’s statement was about more than just representation in Hollywood. It also brought much-needed attention to the standoff at Wounded Knee, South Dakota, between federal agents and Native American activists.
Sacheen Littlefeather Charges: Was She Arrested?
Sacheen Littlefeather did not get arrested as she was given 60 seconds by the producer to make her speech at the 45th Academy Award. She told in an interview that John Wayne was waiting backstage to take her off and had to be restrained by six security men.
“People could not believe what transpired that night,” Littlefeather says in the documentary. In the history of the Academy Awards, she was the first woman of color and the first native indigenous woman to ever make a political statement.
After the speech, she was scrutinized for decades and even unjustly accused of being an imposter. Despite her desire to be an actress, she claims the industry has rejected her. She then moved on to work in the fields of health and nutrition.
