Omar Figueroa Jr Biography
Omar Figueroa Jr. is an American professional boxer who was born on December 13, 1989, in Weslaco, Texas, U.S. In 2014, he was the WBC lightweight title holder.
Figueroa started out as an amatuer boxer fighting about 40 amateur bouts, mostly in Texas and Mexico before turning professioinal. However, after his transition, he stated that he “did not care for” the amateur ranks.

Figueroa won the lightweight world title in 2013 by a unanimous decision over Japan’s Nihito Arakawa for the vacant WBC interim lightweight title. The fight was so vicious that some commentators taunted it as a candidate for 2013 Fight of the Year. However, Figueroa’s reign sadly came to an end in November 2014 when the WBC stripped him of his title.
The WBC took this decision after Figueroa was unable to defend his title due to injury. This opened the way for contention between former featherweight and junior lightweight titlist, Jorge Linares (37-3, 24 KOs) vs Mexico’s Javier Prieto (24-7-2, 18 KOs).

On July 20, 2019, Figueroa faced Cuban welterweight contender Yordenis Ugas in a welterweight WBC title eliminator. Coming into this bout, Figueroa (28-0-1, 19 KO) was unbeaten and was a former lightweight titlist but it was Ugas (23-4, 11 KO) who looked like the undefeated boxer. The 33-year-old Ugas dominated and punished Figueroa throughout the match to win by an easy unanimous decision.
In round one, Ugas surprised Figueroa with a straight right jab that sent Figueroa into the ropes which held him up, and was correctly ruled a knockdown by the referee. The contest became a one-sided affair as Ugas’s dom9inance was evident. Following his victory, Yordenis Ugas will have a shot at the welterweight title. Since this fight, Figueroa has not had fixtures and his next fight is still anyone’s guess.
