Omar Apollo began his musical career by making his own music and uploading it to the free online music service SoundCloud. He was living in an attic and working at Guitar Center and Jimmy John’s.
With just $30 borrowed from a friend, he uploaded his song “Ugotme” to Spotify in 2017, and it quickly gained popularity after being added to the Fresh Finds playlist.
The song had 20,000 streams in a single day and eventually accumulated 15 million.
2018 saw the release of Stereo, Apollo’s critically acclaimed debut EP. Following that, in 2018 and 2019, he went on the “Want Tour” and the “Voyager Tour.”
His second EP, Friends, was created by rock producer John Shanks, who has previously worked with artists including Michelle Branch and Melissa Etheridge.
Friends was released in April 2019. After they linked on Twitter in July 2017, Shanks’ son Dylan Shanks took control of Apollo.
