Hannah Halvorsen, a 23-year-old California native living in Alaska, is on her way to her first Winter Games, two years after being hit by a Jeep while crossing a street in downtown Anchorage.

She landed on the hood, remained there for 200 yards, and then soared off as the driver slammed on the brakes.
She suffered a skull fracture and completely tore her left MCL and PCL off the bone.

This season, she made a strong case for Olympic participation on Dec. 18 when she finished seventh in a freestyle sprint in Dresden, Germany, one position ahead of Olympic team sprint winner Jessie Diggins.
Technically, the race did not count toward Olympic eligibility, but it was tough to overlook.
The freestyle sprint is Halvorsen’s finest race. Every Olympics, the event alternates between freestyle and traditional technique. Fortunately for Halvorsen, freestyle will be held in Beijing next month.
Dresden was also Halvorsen’s final individual race before the Beijing Olympics.
