Early Life And Education

Oliver Dragojević was born on December 7, 1947, in Split, SR Croatia, SFR Yugoslavia, to Marko Dragojević (1908–1991) and Kata Dragojević (1907–1994), who were originally from Vela Luka on the island of Korčula. Marko worked at the Port Authority, while Kata was employed as a cleaner.

Tragically, the couple lost three daughters during World War II. Oliver was their fifth child, born shortly after the family returned from a refugee camp in Egypt. He had an older brother, Aljoša (1946–2011).

Oliver’s parents recognized his musical potential at a young age and enrolled him in music school in Split.

There, he learned to play multiple instruments, including the piano, clarinet, and bass guitar. Dragojević’s ethnic background is Croatian, and his religious beliefs are not widely known.

Career

Oliver Dragojević began his music career in the early 1960s, making his first public appearance at the Split Children’s Festival in 1961 with the song “Baloni” (Balloons).

He gained initial recognition with his band, Batali, which won first place in an amateur singing competition for their rendition of “Yesterday” by The Beatles.

By 1972, Dragojević had expanded his musical horizons, performing in clubs across Germany, Sweden, and Mexico.

His solo career officially launched in 1974 at the Split Festival, where his song “Ča će mi Copacabana” (What Do I Need Copacabana For) won first place, marking the beginning of his rise to stardom.

Over the years, Dragojević released over 20 original albums and earned numerous accolades, including multiple Porin Awards.

One of his most iconic songs, “Cesarica,” written by Zlatan Stipišić Gibonni, won Song of the Year in 1994, further solidifying his place in Croatian music history.

The following year, the song “Galeb i ja” (Seagull and I), a collaboration with composer Zdenko Runjić, became a massive hit across the former Yugoslavia, cementing his status as a household name. His music, marked by emotional depth and powerful ballads, resonated deeply with listeners.

Dragojević’s partnership with composer Zdenko Runjić was instrumental in shaping his sound. Between 1975 and 1980, the duo dominated the music scene of the former Yugoslavia with hits such as “Romanca” (Romance), “Oprosti mi, pape” (Forgive Me, Father), and “Stari morski vuk” (An Old Sea Wolf).

Their collaborations led to more than 200 songs, and much of their success was attributed to their third collaborator, lyricist Jakša Fiamengo. Fiamengo’s work on songs like “Nadalina,” “Piva klapa ispo’ volta” (The Klapa Sings Under the Vault), and “Ostavljam te samu” (I Leave You Alone) helped define the unique sound that Dragojević became famous for.

Throughout his career, Dragojević’s music became timeless, with songs like “Vjerujem u anđele” (I Believe in Angels), “Kad mi dođeš ti” (When You Come to Me), and “Bez tebe” (Without You) remaining evergreen in the Balkans.

His often emotionally intense and candid performances earned him the title “the Cosmic Dalmatian.” In 1990, he won the Split Festival with “Ti si moj san” (You Are My Dream) and continued to succeed in various competitions, including Dora in 1995 and 1997.

Dragojević’s long-term collaboration with Gibonni led to the 2017 album Familija (Family), which won a Porin Award for Album of the Year, further cementing his legacy in the Croatian music scene.
