Nomar Garciaparra Red Sox
In his early years, he was selected by The Milwaukee Brewers in the fifth round of the 1991 draft, but he did not sign. Instead, he signed up at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he played college baseball for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Following his career at Georgia Tech, Nomar was a first-round draft pick of the Red Sox in 1994 and soon joined the Red Sox farm system.
His professional career kickstarted in Class A Advanced, as a member of the Sarasota Red Sox following his NCAA season. Since the season was already underway by the point he joined the team, he only appeared in 28 games.
In 1995, Garciaparra joined the Double-A Trenton Thunder. In 125 games, he batted 267 with 8 home runs and again walked more than he struck out. He also displayed his speed, stealing 35 bases, and continued gaining experience at shortstop.
Red Sox Contract
In the spring of 1998, Nomar and the Red Sox signed a five-year contract worth $23.25 million. The deal also included two team options (for 2003 and 2004) that, if exercised, would raise the deal to $44.25 million. At the time it was unprecedented – signing a player to a long term contract who had just completed his rookie season.
In February 2001, Garciaparra appeared shirtless and muscular on the cover of Sports Illustrated, with the headline “A Cut Above… baseball’s toughest out”. Sports Illustrated later described the cover photo as “controversial”, adding that it fueled the unavoidable speculation of steroid usage.
Baseball fans looked forward to seeing if he might challenge the 400 mark, and Red Sox fans hoped he would lead them back to the postseason with new addition Manny Ramirez. However, Nomar aggravated an old wrist injury just a week after the issue hit newsstands. He signed a one-day contract with the Boston Red Sox on March 10, 2010, to enable him to retire as a member of the Red Sox.
Later, Mia’s husband took a position at ESPN, as a contributing analyst for the program Baseball Tonight as well as select Wednesday Night Baseball telecasts. Additionally, he has been among the lead analysts on ESPN’s coverage of the College World Series. He also contributed analysis for ESPN’s coverage of the Little League World Series telecasts in 2011.
Nomar Garciaparra Hall Of Fame
After receiving only eight votes (1.8%) the former Boston Red Sox shortstop and Rookie of the Year lost his spot on the Hall of Fame ballot. To the average Red Sox nation member or even any baseball fan, it was kind of obvious that Garciaparra wasn’t going to be a Hall of Famer.
